Qualifications for the San Diego Team for 2011
Posted in Tournament on September 9, 2011 by morleyfieldsdQualifications for making the San Diego Team for 2011 Dec. 3 &4
Every year we establish a Mendoza line for team qualification.
This year is unique in that San Diego has an explosion of young talented open players for the first time in many years. Also, our traditional strength at Masters level has gentrified and we now have several outstanding Grandmasters. The team makeup is 5 Open players, 4 Masters, 1 GM, and 1 Woman.
-So, we will still automatically place on the team the top 3 finishers from the course championship in the Open division (Nov 12 & 13). The top finishing Masters and Grandmasters aged players will also automatically qualify if there are at least 5 players represented in that category.
-Win 2 Morley monthlies pro division shooting -20 for 2 rounds and minimum 10 players in division.
-Win 2 PDGA “B” tier events in any pro division for which we have a category on the team
-Win any 1 PDGA “A” tier event in a pro division for which we have a category on the team.
Automatic Grinder Qualification ( match play round robbin Nov. 19 and 20
-any Pro having won a B tier event at any Pro level.
-any open player with a 990 rating or better, Master player 975 or better and Gm 960 or better
-winner of any Morley monthly in Pro division
-top finishers from course championships not automatically qualified for team previously.
-the Amateur winner of the course championship
These qualifications may not be all inclusive as special situations always arise. If you don’t fit into any of these categories after the course championships see me with your situation for Grinder tryouts.

This was a very difficult layout. One entire card DNF’d in the second round as well as 3 other individuals who just were too distraught with their game. Who says there’s no bogeys at Morley Field!?

The Spring Fling 2011 is a “B” tier PDGA points qualifier for the Am Worlds and had a full field of 95 competitors once again this year. The fling was both a SoCal points event and a DGA series event. The first such dual event in southern California’s short disc golf history.7 divisions were hotly contested with 5 divisions having disc baskets for 1st place in that division. The course was laid out to be long and challenging with many risk/reward opportunities. The extremely warm conditions added to the challenge by making discs slipperier and landing areas faster. Scores were much higher than anticipated. In fact, the second round par of 51 for 17 holes had an initial player rating of 973. Since holes 1 and 2 were combined into 1 hole and holes 3 and 4 were also combined the course played much tougher than the first round.
The course is closed to the public for this event and lunch is provided the entrants. There was also a closest to the pin contest on hole 8 won by Dale Chambless of the Men’s division and Jenny Unstead of the Women’s division. During the lunch break the players were able to compete in a “Mondo” throw. We gave away a Mach Lite to Jon Yergler who won the first round and a Fade disc bag and double straps with built in rain jacket to Aaron Van Matre who won the second round. Before the awards were handed out their was a free drawing and 60 items (shirts, hats, towels) donated by Innova, Discraft, and the DGA were won by the lucky contestants who remained. Additional hole sponsors this year were Bobby Martin and the Thursday Poker Group and Mark Madden Construction Co.
It appears that San Diego is finally producing a strong contingent of young players who are ready to move up to the next level. It’s been a dozen years since we’ve had so many high level potential players come along. I attribute this to the formation of the San Diego Aces and the addition of new courses in San Diego. A big thank you goes out to Randy Wylot VP of the San Diego Aces for his help on the computer. Also, Jim McDowell, Dave Devine, Donny Olow, Glenn Triemstra, Oscar Garcia and the entire Morley staff for their help in making this event possible.
