2012 Team Tourney Wrap-up

2012 Southwestern Team Disc Golf Invitational This year’s team tourney was won by a patchwork but talented San Diego team. Rebounding back from an inglorious 6th place finish last year this year’s locals rallied from second seed going into the finals the slip past (6.5-5.5) a veteran Santa Cruz team featuring 3 past world champions.  San Diego finished the prelims with a 6-1 record.  Santa Cruz won the round robin prelims with a 6-1 record having beaten San Diego 7-5. Last year’s second place finisher Huntington Beach fell to 3rd and last year’s winner Arizona fell to 4th. The weatherman’s threat of an impending storm proved false as only the Friday night putting contest saw any perceptible mist at all thankfully.

The event itself is a seven round (12 holes each) match play event. 5 holes are added to our 19 hole layout to make 24 total holes. It pits each team member against a corresponding team member from each different team . So the number one team player plays each number one player from every other team one at a time in a 12 hole “mano e mano” duel. In match play total score doesn’t matter winning the hole is all that counts. If you score a 4 it’s OK as long as your opponent scores a 5. You win the hole and a point. 12 holes equal 12 possible points to be won. A tied hole is a push and points are not carried forward as they are in skins.  So when you see a score such as 10-0 that player actually lost 10 out of 12 holes to their competitor. Unless you’ve experienced it, it’s hard to imagine the humiliation or the exhileration of a severe beat down.

In the finals, as the players were awaiting the final few matches to be reported the San Diego players were suffering a lot of angst as it was rumored that Jeff Nichols and Marty Hapner were tied with just a hole or two left and that his playing partner Greg Olsen had already lost his match. That would have put the teams at a 6-6 tie and Santa Cruz was already ahead on tie breaker individual points. When it was discovered that Jeff had actually pulled out a 1 point win a loud cheer went up throughout the hometown crowd in attendance.

Team Arizona won the “Spirit of the Event” award this year. Team captain Dan Ginnelly’s wife Sue passed away this year. She was a much beloved and respected member of the Frisbee Family. In her memory all the members of Team Arizona wore a memorial T-shirt in her favorite sky blue color. For their extraordinary team spirit they received 3 discs each donated from our generous sponsors Innova Champion discs, Discraft, Disc Golf Association, and Legacy Discs.

Lunch this year was provided by California Kebab and Beer Gardens located in the promenade in PB. Marinated chicken and lamb, hummus, pita bread and several delicious salads greeted the famished horde. This is known as a party tournament to that end we provided the players a free keg of Karl Strauss “Red Trolley” at the tourney hotel in the “family reunion” party room 129. Daniel Lichtman hooked us up and Ian Funston hosted to event.

The putting contest on Friday afternoon was won by Kyle Eckmann #1 player for Huntington Beach. Kyle breezed through all 9 stations hitting the last three on his first of 3 allowed putts. For his magnificent putting display he earned $100. Senior grandmaster Hunt Hyde of Santa Cruz took 2nd and $75, Legacy Disc owner Steve Rico took 3rd and $50. Robert McIntee of HB took 4th and $40 while Master Doug Werner also from Santa Cruz round out the top 5 and received $35.

This was the first year Santa Cruz took home money. Each 2nd place finisher received $120 and 3 discs per player. All the San Diego players in addition to their custom plaques received $250 each and 3 discs per player. This years player package included a dry fit t-shirt and an embroidered and screened jacket plus 2 mini’s , lunch, all weekend play and free drawing where we gave out over $500 worth of Disc Golf swag to the lucky contestants who’s names were drawn and present.

As always there were a number of last minute changes requiring San Diego fillins. Of special note were Chris Rogers filling in at #6 for San Diego who had a winning record (4-3-1) and big Fred Aguero a last minute addition to the SD Aces team who had the second best record of any senior grand master at 5-1-1.

Once again I’d like to thank our marvelous staff: Jim McDowell, Eric Simmons, his son EJ, Hans Degner, Habib, Oscar Garcia and Ian Funston and Daniel Lichtman. Plus all the guys in the shop who did all the pre tourney prep work;Tyler, Mitch, Dan, Angel, Jon, Jesse, and Chet. Special thanks to Jeff Nichols for loaning us 3 baskets and providing spreadsheet results of the event for the web page.

Till next year Z ya.

2012 Morley Field Champion: Carlo Pelg

Story courtesy of Patrick Paramore:

After 3 rounds of play at the 2012 Morley Field Course Championship, the top 4 players in the Pro Division,Carlo Pelg (-23), Micah Dorius (-21), Trey McKelvey (-20), and Tyler Tremelling (-16) faced off each other in the Final 9. Carlo had a two stroke lead going in over the defending champion Micah, with Trey 3 strokes back, and surprising newcomer Tyler in the hunt. Just ask Carlo how many times he has finished bridesmaid to Micah over the last ten or so years and it’s not been a pretty picture for him.

Carlo birdied 7 of the 9 holes to secure his lead and finally become the victor!  Trey who had recently moved back to San Diego this year ties Micah for 2nd place and also secures a spot for the San Diego Team Tournament which will be held the first weekend of December. Tyler takes down 4th and will be the guy to watch out for next year!

In the Amateur division, after 2 days and 3 rounds it came down to a sudden death playoff between Jason Rime and Mitch Z tied at -5. Jason never gave Mitch a chance upon acing the first playoff hole (hole 15).  And with consistent playing and two hot rounds in the Women’s division, Kayleen Boyle takes the championship trophy in the 2012 Morley Field Course Championship!

Team Tournament 2012

Greetings Team Captains, This year’s Southwestern Team Disc Golf Invitational will be held on the weekend of Dec 1 and 2. This year we have the same tourney hotel the Best Western Seven Seas. We have reserved a block of 20 rooms and 2 large suites near the heated pool and 2 spa’s on the property. Their phone # is 1-800-328-1618. Tell them you’re with the “Team Tournament”. The rate is $59.25 per night plus tax for a single bed and $64.75 for 2 queens. They allow up to quad occupancy per room. Rooms have a refrigerator and upon request/availability microwaves. The hotel offers free airport shuttle and free shuttle to the SD Zoo and Sea World. The grounds are 12 acres and have a comfortable lush feel. The onsite restaurant opens at 6 am everyday and closes at 10:30 at night. There is a nice bar right next to the pool with flat screen TV’s. They have a pool table in a separate room inside and a new ping pong table outside by the main Jacuzzi as well. We’ve secured late check out of 1 pm on Sunday for those needing it. The cutoff date for getting this special rate is 11-25-12. So make those reservations early. This is our nicest and best priced hotel ever. The hotel is located at 411 Hotel Circle South, San Diego 92108.  Those coming in on I-5 would take I-8 east to the second hotel circle exit. Turn left at the stop sign at end of freeway off ramp and travel 200 yards paralleling freeway to the last hotel on right (Seven Seas Best Western) before the road turns under the freeway.

This year’s entry fees are $80 per player to be paid to the team captains who I’ll meet with on Friday afternoon to give them their swag before the putting contest which starts at 2:30 pm at the course. This year’s player package will include as yet 2 clothing items (an A4 t-shirt and a mystery item), lunch on Saturday (California Kebab), free drawing, mini’s, and all weekend play .

As in the past a tie in the preliminary round robin rounds is broken by individual match points for that round being totaled up. If it remains a tie it will be broken by the #1 player for each of the two teams playing a sudden death match play from hole 1 prior to the finals if and only if the outcome would have an effect on who gets into the finals. Otherwise it remains a tie in the records.

Also as with all round robin tourneys whether they be Disc Golf, DDC or Ultimate the tie breaking method is clearly delineated in the WFDF rule book; The tie breaking scenario is spelled out in the WFDF Official Rules of Flying Disc Sports. ”206.04 Tie Breaking Procedures: In round-robin play, ties in which two teams have identical win/loss records, are broken by virtue of the head-to-head match in that round. If three or more teams are tied, the following procedure is used to advance one team:

A. If one of the teams has the best record against the other teams with whom they are tied in that round, advance that team.

B. If the tie remains, rank the net point totals of each team from those games played against the other tied teams, and advance the team with the best net point total.

If another team must also be advanced, the following procedure is used:

A. If advancement must be decided between two teams which remain from a previous three team tie, the head-to-head match in that round shall be used.”

Our team seeding for this year is as follows:

Arizona-Dan Ginnelly  -azdgc@msn.com

Huntington Beach-Chris Brophy-playdiscgolf33@yahoo.com

Redwood Empire-Roger Cansler  at jahchupa@yahoo.com

Sylmar-Mike Byrne at discfever@aol.com

San Diego-Micah Dorius at mzdorius @cox.net

Oak Grove-Dago Bribiesca at dagoberto8853@att.com

As always the event is a match play event with the top two teams from the round robin round playing a 19 hole final .  We will have scorecards with the schedule posted on it and maps of both the extra holes and directions to and from the course to the tourney motel posted soon on the morleyfield.com website. The tournament putting contest has $300 cash in it and will be contested at the course starting at 2:30 p.m. on Friday Nov. 30th.

Please remember Morley is a pay to play course as such players arriving at the course on Friday wishing to practice do need to pick up and pay for playbands before beginning practice rounds on Friday.

Thank you and good luck to all,

Z you here,
